~ Heart of Winter ~

~ Heart of Winter ~

winter hands, harsh, cold
they grip, penetrate bones
that mournfully moan
even the naked trees shiver
as the wind whips
rattling roots

icicles hang from the heart of winter
lifeless, a dangerous beauty
catches glint of sun –
prism of colour, resplendent;
deceptive distraction lacking in warmth

and the pond, frozen solid
beckons as a folly
my foolish inner child
flashes a memory of skates
and scarfs enticingly

from the window I turn away
but not before signing my name

Askance glance ensues
Vividly vain countenance
Delusional farce

~ Paved Playgrounds ~

~ Paved Playgrounds ~

Didn’t we slide down the hot tin sliding boards
A mixture of pleasure and pain early found
On the paved yards, of playground;

Scuffing our knees, cheeks and chin
When braving the tin, we’d try again and again
And, didn’t we say, someday, we’d change the rules

Where all is seen, as if in a dream, through the eyes
Of reality, checked in red and hop scotch rocks:
Toss me a marble, I’ve a game yet to win!

~ Today, I’ll Be Free ~

~ Today, I’ll Be Free ~

Today, I’ll be free
Toss these bags of garbage
In a pit of possibility

These barrels of tears
In a river of revival
Watch as they rush to the sea

Today, I’ll be free

Time, of no importance
Destination to chance
And I’ll romance the day
In a capricious, whimsical way:

“Never again to give so much of myself
That I loose my identity, my happiness,
My personal goals, my right to love and be loved
For the sake of others, who selfishly
Took of me, til my cup was empty”

No, today, I’ll be free
And the whole world lays before me
With the open arms of acceptance

Just watch me forget to remember
This straight jacket of responsibility
That nearly drained the life of me

No, today, I’ll be free – forever me!

~ Merry Christmas – Happy Holidays? ~

~ Merry Christmas – Happy Holidays? ~

Eight Christmas’ had come and gone since I felt the urge to be amongst the shoppers; to become part of the hustle and bustle. By the time I was through shopping, I was saddened by the obvious, “there was no Merry in Merry Christmas and no Happy in Happy Holidays”…for the common man, but “Merry Materialistic and a Happy Commercialism” greetings was ringing in my ears, like “the Bells of Christmas” had done, once upon a time, long, long ago.

I witnessed
with much sadness and a sense of loss
strangers pushing and shoving,
nasty askance looks as targeting darts
people with stressed faces void of smiles,
laden with packages, cursing the weight
tired, sleepy children screaming and crying
parents looking like chimney stacks ready to explode,
attempting to remind them “Santa is watching you”…
clerks with faces flushed from the endless lines,
their fingers cramped and curled from calculating

Cha-ching goes the mighty dollar –
yet meager the ones ending up in their pockets

young couples arguing over prices
attempting to “keep up appearances”
assuring their success by all that glitters
people from all walks of life
but not one, from my humble observation
“Merry or Happy”

I paid for my potters clay
wishing I could mold
and mass produce
“The True Spirit of Christmas”

~ Christmas Call to Action ~

~ Christmas Call to Action ~

Christmas candles all aglow
Outside, swirling, whirling,drifting snow
Soft and low ole Bing is singing
The ‘Bells of Christmas’ ringing, ringing

Presents scattered beneath the tree
Ribbons, bows; silver-gold mystery
Tiny hands reaching, eyes of delight
Reflecting flickering colors bright

The season of giving, of thankful hearts
Reunions of families living miles apart
Stories of old cheerfully shared
Current blessings in praise declared:

The giving to others, those in great need
With open hearts graciously received
Tis the theme, season, truthful meaning
Tis the hand of God intervening

My opinion…Christmas should last all year
Imagine life’s changed, poverty to disappear
Tiny tummies fully feed, hunger- a ghost of past
The homeless, our Veterans sheltered at last

Perhaps the greatest Christmas call should be
A universal attempt at harmony; the savior of humanity!

~ Nature Waltz ~

~ Nature Waltz ~

amongst the flora, fauna
terra firma scent and sound
an intangible, evanescent
soul-stirring touch ensues

delicate, symphonic
nature performs
a heart of stone
would crumble
softening to the sound

here, dreams are conceived
lives renewed
by a positive perspective;
natures embrace
the simplicity of “being”
restores, preserves
the wondering wanderer.
